Porträt von Helmut Thieltges

Helmut Thieltges

“Classical music is the true art. It’s the basis of everything. Anyone who wants to do something else by force can call themselves modern.”

Helmut Thieltges was considered one of the best chefs in Germany and was an exceptional talent in top gastronomy. Awarded multiple top ratings by the Michelin Guide, Gault-Millau, Schlemmer Atlas and Der Feinschmecker, he helped the Sonnora restaurant in Dreis achieve international fame.
It is only thanks to him and his wife Ulrike Thieltges that the SONNORA has developed as you know it today.
Helmut Thieltges’ passing far too early in July 2017 has left a huge gap.

History

The beginnings

Helmut Thieltges was born in Dreis in 1955. His parents Anna-Maria and Vinzenz Thieltges opened a small guesthouse, Haus Elisabeth, in Dreis in the 1960s.

In May 1978, the Waldhotel Sonnora celebrated its opening in the middle of the Dreis forest. Helmut Thieltges assisted his mother in catering for the pension guests and at the same time opened a small a-la-carte restaurant, which quickly became popular with guests from the region and neighbouring countries.

Naming

Haus Elisabeth was named in memory of Vinzenz Thieltges’ sister, who died at a young age. In the search for a name for the newly built hotel, a girl’s name was to be used again: a catchy, unusual, and melodious name. An American girl who lived with her parents in Dreis had the name they were looking for: “Sonora”. The name was Germanized by adding a second “n”.

Component for gourmets

The first restaurant guides became aware of the young man from the Eifel and listed the SONNORA restaurant.
Since then, our restaurant has been an integral part of the gourmet scene.
Anna-Maria and Vinzenz Thieltges supported their son in all matters. The father Vinzenz is responsible for the structural changes.
Ulrike Thieltges, formerly Schmitz, joined the family in 1986. Their son Florian was born in 1999.

Success through passion

Together, the Thieltges couple have made the SONNORA outstanding and shaped it in an incomparable way.
The combination of two hosts who were masters in their respective professions and complemented each other perfectly was not to be the last time the SONNORA was successful.

THE RAMBICHLER ERA

That the young chef and the sommelier would eventually take over the management of the SONNORA hand in hand and leave their mark on it could be called fate.
Immediately impressed by the incomparable aura and perfection, Clemens Rambichler knew that he had found a new home at the SONNORA.
Magdalena Rambichler, formerly Brandstätter, has been a permanent feature at the SONNORA since 2008.

The death of Helmut Thieltges should not mean the end for the SONNORA and so Magdalena and Clemens Rambichler decided to continue the success story.
With a view to Thieltges’ work and with their own passion, a new era begins.
